Teen-aged Monikka Wong finds him while waiting for her bus. The others (The Next) track the dog down to California, and try to get Monikka away from it, but that just frightens her into the street, where she is run over by her bus. The Next decide to intervene, and manifest themselves on Earth, healing Monikka from her fatal wounds. Picking Earthly forms (mostly) and names, they then go with Monikka, discovering that they have caused a rip in the continuum membrane when they jumped to Earth. The authorities from where the Next is from find them missing, and send someone after them, to return and then disincorporate them.
