Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons – Pirate Adventures Await!

Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons is taking readers back to the 1500s with the adventures of the iconic monster occurring in a world of pirates. The upcoming IDW series is doing something different with the world of Godzilla, which should have longtime and newer fans of the city-destroying creature excited about what’s coming next in his comic book stories.

While viewers and readers are used to seeing Godzilla in stories set in modern times, the King of the Monsters has been on Earth for tens of thousands of years (depending on which origin you follow). That means Godzilla was around during different time periods and had been causing chaos on the planet for centuries. A new story from IDW Publishing takes Godzilla back to a time of pirates, with the Kaiju’s story taking place during a swashbuckling time of treasure hunters.

Frank Tieri and Inaki Miranda, who previously collaborated on Old Lady Harley for DC Comics, are teaming up for Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons, which will follow Sir Francis Drake, whose quest for treasure and gold will lead him and his crew directly into the paths of Godzilla, who is living on an island with other monsters. Check out the full-text synopsis for the issue below.

In the 1500s, before humanity had successfully traveled the entire globe, it was believed that monsters ruled the oceans just beyond the horizon. "Here there be dragons..." was written on maps to denote the areas people dared not go.That is, until Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the seas, visiting foreign lands and collecting treasure. That's what history tells us, at least, but history does not have the full tale. Monsters did lurk yonder, living on an island that still doesn't appear on any map, and among them was the king of them all-Godzilla!

The IDW series will feature four covers, including a stunning main cover from Miranda featuring the deadly Kaiju towering over a pirate ship with a storm raging on.

Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #1 also features a variant cover from artist Tyler Kirkham (with a virgin 1:10 variant) featuring Godzilla emerging from the sea and lifting the ship up on his back. The image shows the incredible size of Godzilla and how the treasure hunters are in trouble after running into the Kaiju.

Lastly, Benjamin Dewey draws a monster-filled cover featuring Godzilla and Mothra among the creatures seemingly battling it out as the pirate ship navigates through the giant-sized fight. The variant is a 1:25 incentive cover.

The first issue of Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #1 is available at CaptCan Comics right now, with the debut comic being a part of this week’s new comics! The five-issue miniseries will come out throughout the summer of 2023, so if you’d like to keep up with the latest adventures of Godzilla, don’t forget to pre order future issues on our website!
