New Series Revives Iconic Monster in Fresh Adventures

One of horror’s most beloved monsters is getting a brand-new limited series from superstar creators Ram V, Dan Watters, and Matthew Roberts. The new Image Comics and Skybound title, The Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!, will shine a light on the fan-favorite creature and showcase new adventures taking place after the original Creatures of the Black Lagoon film.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon is a 1954 film starring Richard Carlson, Julia Adams, and Ricou Browning, telling the tale of the last remaining member of a human-amphibian race, Gill-man. After a group of scientists discover the bones of another Gill-man, they search out to find a living one. In their mission, Gill-man shows affection towards one of the marine biologists, Kay — leading to deadly conflict between her team and the monster. Gill-man technically dies in the first film but has since appeared in several sequels and spinoffs — while the movie also serves as direct inspiration for Guillermo Del Toro’s “Shape of Water.”
As part of their new Universal Monsters line, which includes James Tynion and Martin Simmons Dracula series, a new Creature From the Black Lagoon four-issue series is coming later this year. The story follows journalist Kate Marsden, who tries to track down the creature, taking place years after the first film. The debut issue features a handful of covers, including Matthew Roberts' main artwork featuring the titular character walking in water. Joshua Middleton’s variant (also available as a 1:25 black and white incentive cover) has Gill-man chasing after someone underwater. Dani draws a 1:10 variant featuring Kate’s close encounter with the monster. Joelle Jones' 1:50 incentive variant features Gill-man about to wrap his claws around an unsuspecting swimmer’s head. Meanwhile, Alex Ross brings his signature style to a 1:75 and 1:100 variant. Check out the regular cover below, followed by a text solicit for the issue.
