In a frame story, grandfather tells the tale of Queen Samaris 12th, who won eternal youth from a witch and then reneged on the promised payment, killing her instead. After 300 years she meets the Phantom, who treats her with disdain. Capturing him by trickery, Samaris demands marriage. When he refuses she realizes that she has fallen in love with him -- invoking the witch's curse, suddenly aging to her full 300 years and crumbling to dust.

Letters
  • Meeting as young people in America, Diana and the Phantom become sweethearts for life. A beautiful young woman, and an Olympian in swimming and diving, she has many suitors, but loves only the Phantom.
  • In a frame story, grandfather tells the tale of Queen Samaris 12th, who won eternal youth from a witch and then reneged on the promised payment, killing her instead. • The Phantom and the Bandar live in the Deep Woods, the entrance to which is concealed by a waterfall and guarded by warriors.
  • Track Hunter and Oloo investigate a chimpanzee in hunter's garb -- a chimp who attacks villagers with a rifle. Track Hunter captures the chimp after recognizing that he is a trained animal shooting blanks.
  • The Bambuti consider themselves "the Children of the Forest." They gather food, hunting small animals with nets and large ones with poisoned arrows. They love their homeland very much.
  • The Bandar live with the Phantom. They know and guard all his secrets -- most notably, the fact that he is not 400 years old. They help him whenever he is in need, and they train each young Phantom-to-be in the ways of the jungle. "All he knows, he owes to these tiny people."
