  • The Earth is rocked by earchquakes and volcanic eruptions, causing widespread chaos which the different teams of Avengers try to mitigate. Many heroes, however, have been frozen in stasis. Unknown to them all, the planet has vanished from off-world observation. As the teams gather together to plan their next move, the mysterious Voyager arrives, and everyone seems to recognize her as a founding member.
  • The Avengers welcome back the hitherto-unknown Voyager, who has called the heroes together to deal with the crisis overwhelming the Earth. The expanded team tries to figure out what they must do next, but they don't know that halfway around the world an epic battle between the Black Order and a new Lethal Legion is brewing. Two members of the Black Order appear in the sky over New York City and Avengers Mansion explodes with the team inside.
  • Voyager is able to teleport all the Avengers out of the Mansion before they are injured in the explosion. They split up into smaller teams to take on the villains, who are players in a game organized by the Grandmaster.
  • The game between the Grandmaster and Challenger pits three teams against each other for the possession of the mysterious black Pyramoids: the Avengers, the Black Order, and the new Lethal Legion. However, the first person to touch one of the Pyramoids is apparently disintegrated.
  • As the Avengers react to the apparent death of the Human Torch, Grandmaster and the Challenger discuss tactics and their combative past.
  • The Avengers try to regroup, changing up some of the teams. Wonder Man has disappointing news for Hank and Nadia about Jarvis's condition.
  • The Avengers learn that they are players in a new game set up by the Grandmaster, and that the goal is to take possession of the mysterious Pyramoids, even though they seem to destroy the person who touches them. Voyager reveals her origin to some of the newer team members, while more old allies show up to help.
  • Hawkeye and Red Wolf arrive to help the Avengers against the Lethal Legion. Red Wolf, deducing that touching the Pyramoid is not fatal, retrieves it and vanishes. Elsewhere, the Challenger is enticing the formerly-deceased Hulk to join the battle.
  • Beast travels inside Jarvis's brain to cure his mystifying condition and finds the butler's memories of Avengers history, while Nadia fights zombie ghosts that have invaded the hospital. Jarvis begins to recover, and warns the heroes that their memories of Voyager are false, because she never existed before.
  • Voyager, revealed to be the daughter of the Grandmaster, acquires the final Pyramoid and barricades herself inside the Avengers Auxiliary Headquarters. Challenger now controls the resurrected Hulk and sends him to capture Voyager. The Avengers, not yet knowing her connection to the game, try to defend her.
  • The Hulk takes down every Avenger that tries to stop him from reaching Voyager and the final Pyramoid, and then the remaining members of the Black Order arrive with the same goal.
  • Wonder Man tries different nonviolent tactics to talk down the Hulk, but without success. Thor, Rogue, and Hercules arrive in time to help the other Avengers against the Black Order and the Hulk. Voyager betrays her father and wants to ally herself with the Avengers, though everyone is still shocked at her original deception. Challenger accuses the Grandmaster of cheating and lashes out against him.
  • The heroes demand answers from Voyager, but Janet attempts to reinforce her desire to help the Avengers, while the Challenger prepares to destroy the Earth. Jarvis begs a despondent Bruce Banner, who is not at all happy about his resurrection, not to give up, and Quicksilver believes he has discovered why some of the heroes have been frozen in stasis.
  • With the game over, the battle begins.
  • All over the world, heroes work to save people from the widespread disaster. While most of the Avengers combine their power to take down the Challenger, Lightning faces the Grandmaster alone in a game of cards to retrieve Red Wolf and the Human Torch.
  • All the players in the Grandmaster's game, no longer compelled to play, consider their next moves.
